Different A/C Vehicle Systems

What’s the Difference Between R-134a and R-1234yf?

Understanding the Different Types of Vehicle A/C Systems & Machines

When your car’s A/C stops working, it can make summer driving miserable. But did you know that not all A/C systems are the same? At Graham Auto Repair, we service both newer and older vehicle A/C systems — and the machines we use depend on the refrigerant your car needs.

What Are A/C Machines?

A/C machines help us recharge your car’s refrigerant, test for leaks, and make sure everything is working properly. Without these tools, your A/C system can’t be serviced accurately or safely.

At Graham Auto Repair, we use two different machines to service A/C systems:

  1. Robinair 34788NI – This machine works with R-134a refrigerant, found in many vehicles made before 2015.
  2. Snap-on A/C Machine – This machine can handle both R-134a and the newer R-1234yf refrigerant, commonly used in vehicles made after 2015.

What’s the Difference Between R-134a and R-1234yf?

  • R-134a is used in older cars (typically before 2015)
  • R-1234yf is the newer, eco-friendly alternative
  • The newer refrigerant is more expensive, but better for the environment
  • Your vehicle can only use the type it was designed for — we’ll help you find out which
